Learner Characteristics

I will be teaching in a class of 6 students in a senior cohort. The children in this class will range from the ages of 8-12, with intellectual capacities of a Grade 1 level. All of the students have significant intellectual delays and learning difficulties and find it hard to engage in the regular curriculum. The main educative focus to do with the curriculum is to help them with basic numeracy and literacy. Along with this, basic life skills are taught and practiced such as toileting, cooking, social skills, language and communication.

The general characteristics of the 6 learners

• Senstive to sensory stimulation: sound, touch, sight
• Think in pictures and are very visual
• Language and communicative delays preventing them from attaining social skills
• Delay in intellectual development- Literacy and Numeracy
